RON WARD/TIMES & TRANSCRIPT Jeff Garcia shows off the tie that he is selling for Prostate Cancer CanadIt might not yet be as iconic as a pink ribbon symbolizing breast cancer, but a blue male necktie may soon become synonymous with prostate cancer research.

Prostate Cancer Canada has unveiled a signature blue tie, which will be sold across the country, with proceeds going towards research for the deadly cancer.

Moncton has been chosen as a select city to unveil the signature tie, with a special event to be held Feb. 16 at Vie Tapas & Lounge.

"Basically what we want to do is bring awareness to prostate cancer as well as raise money," said Jeff Garcia, owner of Zachary Samuels clothing store, where the ties are being sold. "It's not a type of cancer that is widely talked about because it has to do with men, but they say 1 in 6 men in Canada in their lifetime will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Basically it's an awareness thing and that is if men go early enough to the doctor it can be eradicated."

It's a cause that hits close to home for Garcia, as his father died from prostate cancer 30 years ago.

"Back then they didn't have the same research or technology that they do today. Now it can be cured," he said, noting he was honoured to be asked to spearhead the campaign here in Moncton. "I have a number of clients that are survivors, as well as family members that are survivors."

The ties are made of Italian silk and are hand-made in Canada by Dion Neckwear. They are being sold at Zachary Samuels clothing store at 229 Collishaw St. for $65, with all money going to the cause.

"Prostate Cancer Canada usually does a deal with the retailers that people buy the tie for $65 and Prostate Canada gets $50, but Jeff (Garcia) is not taking a cent, which speaks volumes to the kind of guy he is," said Mike Randall, who is doing communications for the Feb. 16 event.

The ties will also be on sale on site at the event, as well as female scarves for $45.

Moncton Mayor George LeBlanc is scheduled to bring greetings from the city in helping kick off the event.

"It's really nice that our mayor is leading the charge when it comes to the political circle. He's a great salesman for our city," Garcia said. "... I think it's really important to mention that he is one of the first guys that stepped up."

Garcia said the goal for the event is to sell 154 ties, which would mean over $10,000 raised.

The event will kick-off at 7 p.m. at Vie Tapas & Lounge, which is located on 196 Robinson St.

There will be wine and cheese and donated door prizes available to be won. Those interested in attending are asked to e-mail viemoncton@gmail.com to register. Space is limited and those attending are asked to either have purchased one of the signature ties in advance, purchase one at the event or to make a donation to prostate cancer research once on the site.
